This year’s spring meeting will be held at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. This meeting will not have formal presentations, but rather consist of a business meeting and various tours, along with the usual opportunities for networking. Please register here if you plan to attend.

Descriptions of the three morning tours: (Each will be given three times.)

• Saint John’s University Archives – Peggy Roske, CSB/SJU Archivist, and Elizabeth (Liz) Knuth, Archives Associate

Saint John’s University dates back to 1857.  The SJU Archives were established to collect, preserve, and make available the historical records that document the origin, development and achievements of the University, its faculty, staff, and alumni.  Some of its resources are digital.  As of 2017, the Archives is in a remodeled, expanded and state-of-the-art space.

• Rare Books and Manuscripts at Saint John’s – Matt Heintzelman, Curator

Dr. Heintzelman, curator for rare books and manuscripts and for the Austria-Germany Study Center, will introduce materials from the collections at SJU, including printed books from the 15^th to the 20^th centuries, as well as manuscripts from various traditions (European, African, Asian), and historical documents within the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) collections, including letters signed by European monarchs, as well as medieval and early modern legal documents from Spain, Italy and elsewhere.

• The Saint John’s Bible – Tim Ternes, Director

The Saint John’s Bible is a monumental achievement in book arts.  While completed in 2011, the folios of the Bible remain unbound at this time to allow for widespread exhibition and traveling.  Tim Ternes, director of The Saint John’s Bible, will give participants a tour of the many details and challenges that went into creating an exhibition space for presenting the loose folios of the Bible in a conservationally sound format that made them appear as bound books.

• •  Saint John’s Bible Vault Tour by Tim Ternes 

 Location:  Saint John’s Bible vault, Peter Engel Science Building [next door to Library]
Learn more about the making of The Saint John’s Bible in a behind-the-scenes vault tour.   Guests will explore the tools, materials, sketches used in making the Bible and have the opportunity to see and handle the Bible folios without the typical barriers of glass cases and display mounts.  Limited to a maximum ten participants.  60 minutes.

• • • Exhibits tour by Dr. Matthew Heintzelman

 Title: Living Prayer: Prayer brought to Life, Living Through Prayer
 Location: Alcuin Library’s HMML Reading Room/Gallery and Culhane Gallery
 Living Prayer introduces an approach to life that is not grounded on modern concepts of time, but on the rhythm of a daily routine that calls the believer to pray eight times per day—from Matins to Compline. In the Culhane Gallery one can see several Books of Hours, each opened to a different time of day. Continuing to the HMML Reading Room and Gallery, one can also learn about Saint Benedict’s views on reading the Psalms, as well as the Breviaries, Diurnals, Antiphonals, and other books that have been used for the Divine Office over the centuries.  Limited to a maximum 15 participants.  30-45 minutes.

Directions:

Take the St. John’s University exit off of I-94 and drive straight south to the campus, about one mile.

After the first stop sign:

• If you take the first left, you can park in the Science parking lot and enter the addition, Door 1 on the map.  You will be on the Lower Level, and room 178 will be straight ahead on your left. Restrooms are on the right.
• If you keep going and drive up to the Abbey Church, you can park in any of the lots, and enter either:
  • the Learning Commons’ southeast entrance, Door 2 on the map. Then take the elevator down to the Lower Level; Room 178 will be on y our left. Restrooms are on the right
  • Alcuin Library’s main entrance, Door 3 on the map. Then take the elevator or the stairs to the Lower Level and look for signs to Room 178.
• We will be gathering in Room 178 in the Learning Commons addition to the Alcuin Library.  There will be signs leading the way from entrances.
